CLAN TARTAN MUNRO TARTAN |
Legend has it that, in the 11th century, King Malcolm II rewarded the Clan Munro with lands in Ross-shire, after they had helped to drive Viking invaders from Scandinavia.
By the 14th century they were established in Easter Ross where they grew in power. The clan seat, Foulis Castle, overlooked the Cromarty Firth and the chief of the clan became known as the Munros of Foulis.
Members of the clan took part in the Battle of Bannockburn with Robert the Bruce . Some of the Clan Munro took part in the English Civil War in the 17th century, fighting on the side of the royalists. This led to many of them being transported to New England. Even in the face of such adversity members of the clan continued to succeed. Most notably James Munroe became the 5th President of the USA.
As a Presbyterian clan the Munros did not support the Jacobite Risings by the catholic Stewarts and in fact, Sir Robert, the 6th Baronet, was killed at Falkirk in 1746 fighting with government troops. Foulis Castle was damaged by the MacKenzies during the uprising of 1745 but was subsequently restored.
Over the centuries many members of the clan have become well-known. Perhaps two of the most famous are the writer ‘Saki’, otherwise known as Hector Hugh Munro, who died in the first world war and the mountaineer Sir Hugh Munro. The eponymous Sir Hugh was responsible for listing the high mountains of Scotland, that is those which are 3,000 feet above sea level. These peaks subsequently became known as The Munros.
Foulis Castle is still the home of the Munros of Foulis and remains externally very much as it was when it was first built.
