CLAN ANDERSON ~ BRIEF HISTORICAL NOTES

The clan name Anderson, ‘son of Andrew’ is widely used in Scotland in several forms, including McAndrew. The derivation is from the Gaelic, meaning servant of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The name is also popular in Scandinavia. The first mention of McAndrew is about 1400 when the name first appeared in the area of Badenoch. However the name did appear in the Ragman Rolls of 1296, when two citizens from Dumfries and Peebles, with the name of Andreu, swore allegiance to Edward I.

A famous member of the clan, Little John McAndrew was known for his skill as a bowman. However the clan is noted for its intellectual achievement throughout the centuries. Alexander Anderson, of Aberdeen, published works on geometry and algebra during 1612 and 1619. This work brought him great acclaim in Europe. His cousin, David, was also known for his mathematical brain and is renowned for developing a way of removing a huge rock which was blocking the entrance to Aberdeen harbour. The talent continued in a grandson, James Gregory who invented the reflecting telescope. Several generations later, James Anderson predicted monsoons which Captain Cook later confirmed on return from his expeditions.

The main family of Anderson is considered to be that of Ardbreck.
